The town of Horncastle goes to the polls tomorrow, to vote on whether to save and re-furbish our town hall, or sell it to developers, and spend the money elsewhere in Lincolnshire (but very probably not in Horncastle).
So far there has been very little information on what the Save Horncastle Town Hall brigade actually plan to do that is different. Indeed the only service that I can see will be truly missed, is when the Blood Donor bus sets up in there. What exactly are we voting to save?
This can also be directed at the council who want to demolish the building. What are their plans? Some months ago a council spokes-person huffed that the people of Horncastle should be glad that the council is selling off old property, in order to invest the money. The problem is that the town hall is the only property that is worth selling off, and that’s probably because of it’s car park, more than the actual building.
Tomorrow I will go to vote, but which way I can’t tell. A part of me says vote to save the town hall, simply because I believe that any funds from it’s sale will be spent elsewhere. If the council were to say exactly what they planned to do, I might vote to demolish, if I agreed with the plan.
One idea that will make me vote to demolish the building, is the Horncastle Community Cinema idea put forward by the Save Horncastle Town Hall brigade. All that will do is waste money, and endanger the life of the Kinema In The Woods, in Woodhall Spa.
[edit]
The local free newspaper just fell through the door, and it has about a third of a page concerning the town hall, with some for and against arguments, as well as a little history. A very, very important sub-note though states
Although ELDC does not have to honour the decision, it is hoped that those responsible for the hall’s future…blah, blah (Horncastle Target)
What a farce. £5000+ spent on polling the people, to get a result that the East Lindsey District Council can just thumb their nose at. What a joke!
